Issue 41. Digital Culture and Democracy: Alternative Forms of Participation, Activism, and Management

2024-12-06

Researchers, professors, and postgraduate students are invited to participate in issue 41 of the journal Entretextos, whose theme is “Digital Culture and Democracy: Alternative Forms of Participation, Activism, and Management.” The purpose of this edition is to present works that:

  • Address how digital environments have transformed political and social participation and how they enable citizens to get involved in decision-making.
  • Explore how social movements have organized and gained visibility through digital media, and how new forms of protest and advocacy have emerged.
  • Examine how political actors and government organizations have adopted technological tools in their management practices and how they have engaged with citizens.
  • Investigate how these new forms of digital participation in various political contexts are inclusive or exclusive for different sectors of the population.
  • Study how the lack of access to technology affects citizen participation in building democracy in the digital age.
  • Delve into the importance of digital activism as a factor in strengthening democracy.
  • Investigate the usefulness of new systems for the development of digital governance, transparency, and citizen participation.
  • Reflect on the challenges of using emerging technologies and the consequences for democracy, institutional trust, or public opinion polarization.
  • Analyze how digital media (through algorithms or artificial intelligence) can influence political participation and public opinion.

De la Garza and Barredo (2017) point out that the emergence of cyberactivism during the 2012 presidential elections marked the first time in history that the political class recognized the importance of paying attention to emerging media in light of new political scenarios, new mechanisms for digital participation, and new electoral processes, particularly regarding the influence they have had in subsequent years.

Moreover, according to INEGI (2023), the digital revolution has transformed society and fostered the emergence of a new domain, cyberspace, which represents a culture driven by advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). These technologies have enabled greater access to various digital service platforms, which could provide opportunities to learn more, educate the population, improve health, engage in the new economy, communicate better with the government, and become better individuals and citizens.

Therefore, it is crucial to focus on how technologies reshape forms of participation, activism, and political management. It is essential to analyze the opportunities and challenges digital platforms offer citizens to express their opinions, organize social movements, and exert pressure on political actors, breaking down hierarchical and geographical barriers. In this sense, proposals are welcome from the following fields of knowledge:

  • Political Science and related disciplines.
  • Legal Sciences and Law.
  • Humanities and Arts.
  • Engineering, Technological Development, and Innovation.
  • Social and Anthropological Sciences.

However, proposals from other disciplines may also be considered if they are related to the theme of this issue. The types of contributions accepted are as follows:

  • Research articles.
  • Review articles.
  • Case studies.

This issue is coordinated by Dr. Daniela Ivette Martínez Rosales from the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes (Aguascalientes, Mexico) and Dr. Carlos Arteaga López from Universidad Iberoamericana León (León, Guanajuato, Mexico).
