The present text develops from two currents, namely artistic manifestation and cultural practice, that converge in a glance at 21st-century cinema. On the one hand, it attempts to succinctly review the persistence of the habit of movie-theater attendance, an activity that survives, despite the expansion of alternative media for enjoying films and, consequently, to ponder this social phenomenon, considering the particular characteristics of the films on offer in a specific context, in this case the city of León, Guanajuato, where it is possible to consider various questions from the point of view of the behavior and motivations of the audience. On the other hand, the paper proposes a general mapping of the films, directors and cinematic trends of the 21st century, one of whose characteristics is the diversity of proposals, ranging from very personal ventures of the auteur to projects more focused on broad segments of the public, accustomed to seeing films as one of their regular activities. If moviegoing is to continue as a habitual activity, then the way in which the supply of films on exhibit is configured, and the evolution of movie theaters and their complementary services, turn out to be elements the contribute to finding explanations for the above-mentioned cultural phenomenon.
