The innovation in medical devices industry and its contribution to the rising competitiveness of Mexico in the health sector

The world is moving increasingly towards the knowledge economy, and this contributes to the market competitiveness of countries. Despite investing less than 1 percent of gross domestic product in activities related to science, technology, and innovation, Mexico has established itself as one of the countries worldwide with the highest ratings in terms of scientific contribution and development of inventions. The medical devices sector has flourished in Mexico, and it is the leading exporter of goods in this sector in Latin America. Is this article we discuss the most important indicators of scientific development and growth in this sector, and the federal supports that exist to promote it. We discuss our efforts on generating new inventions, value-added, in order to transform Mexico from having solely a manufacturing industry to a country that is capable of designing products, processes, and services and thus, to even further increasing the competitiveness of Mexico.
