The enterprises that integrates the industrial sector at Mexico, particularly those located at Guanajuato, participate in a global market facing competitors from all over the world. The development of proprietary technologies that can be protected by a patent is a feasible alternative to achieve a competitive edge. By doing research and development, it is possible to design products with characteristics or functions that other competitors can not offer. Another alternative is to develop new manufacture processes to reduce production cost. The majority of the enterprises do not possess the infrastructure needed to achieve this. Nevertheless, the academic institutions and public research centers have highly specialized human resources, as well as research infrastructure. Those could complement the capabilities of the local industry. As an example, he describe here the collaboration process between the enterprise Grober León and the Universidad Iberoamericana to develop and deploy a computer vision based inspection system for braided cords. This project was recognized with the award VIII Premio Concyteg a la Innovación Tecnológica Guanajuato 2015.
