Abstract

At the end of 2019, the world population was affected by the outbreak of a new virus, called SARS-CoV2, which caused the disease known as COVID-19, declared pandemic in March, 2020. Due to its economic and social impact, the scientific community has worked tirelessly to understand the origin of this virus and its characteristics in order to reduce the risks to health and prevent future outbreaks of new variants. Regarding its origin, theories that ensure coronavirus was created in the laboratory for various purposes, such as regulating the world population, have been inevitable. With the aim of challenging the conspiracy hypotheses without scientific validity that seem convenient or convincing, this article tries to explain, in a simple and informative way, the possible origin of SARS-CoV2 from a scientific point of view, based on the genomics and using computational tools. Supported by bioinformatics, the genomic sequence of SARS-CoV2 is compared with those of other coronaviruses that have previously infected humans or animals, placing main interest in their spikes. The differences or similarities of the sequences allow elucidating the possible origin of the virus.
