On this occasion we present to our readers of Entretextos an issue that addresses a crucial topic for the development of our country: social participation and the construction of citizenship. Although in recent years progress has been made in representative democracy, for example, the increase in the credibility of electoral processes, the autonomy of the bodies responsible at national and state level, the creation of institutions to support transparency and accountability mechanisms, such as the Federal Institute for Access to Public Information, these advances are currently showing clear signs of weakening or outright regression. The subject is approached from different theoretical reviews on citizenship, its construction, its exercise and its limitations; on the different spaces of social participation, such as: the city as a space for participation or a way of social cohesion, the popular movements, the different population groups, such as the inhabitants of marginalized urban neighborhoods.
