It is often said that Mexico is a mosaic of diverse cultures, but the negative connotation that sometimes arises from this statement stems from the perception of lacking a clear national identity. This article reflects on the different nation-building projects from Independence in 1810 to the present, analyzing the thought currents that have guided their construction: cultural homogeneity and the recognition of differences. It concludes with the need for a national model that emerges from a unique identity, integrating past lessons and projecting into the future.
