A Theoretical Perspective

Abstract

This article presents a theoretical approach to urban geography as one of the principal subdisciplines of human geography. It examines its conceptual foundations, historical development, and main fields of study, emphasizing the analysis of cities, their internal structure, their relationships with surrounding areas, and urbanization processes. The article also discusses urban space as a social construct shaped by the interaction between human activities and the physical environment, highlighting the reciprocal influence between people and their surroundings. Finally, it reflects on the challenges facing contemporary cities, including rapid growth, peripheral expansion, and the need to develop more sustainable urban models focused on social well-being, stressing the importance of rethinking the city as a space for human coexistence and development.
