New Perspectives on the City

Abstract

The article analyzes different perspectives for understanding the city and contemporary urbanization processes. It begins with definitions that relate the city to territory, social life, and its political and institutional functions, and subsequently examines the economic dimensions of urbanization and urban competitiveness. In contrast to these approaches, it incorporates a sociocultural perspective that conceives the city as a system of social and cultural relations and political institutions. From a systemic approach, the article argues that the urban phenomenon must be understood through the interaction of environmental, social, economic, cultural, and urban-territorial subsystems. It also addresses the transformation of the compact city into dispersed and polycentric territorial forms associated with new flows of information, resources, and communication. Finally, it points out that these processes pose significant challenges for urban management, since existing models are insufficient to anticipate growth and achieve truly sustainable development.
