Abstract

Intermittent fasting has been shown to be effective in weight loss and metabolic control in overweight or obese patients, but it is not considered an ideal strategy for the treatment of overweight or obesity, since, at one year, its effect is comparable to the results of a conventional hypocaloric diet. The aim of this study was to determine, by means of a systematic review, the effect of intermittent fasting on weight reduction and metabolic indicators in adults with obesity. For this purpose, a search was conducted in the EBSCO, PubMed, Scielo and Redalyc databases for articles in English and Spanish, published between 2018 and 2022, in which intermittent fasting of any type was applied, overweight or obese adults participated and whose effects were appreciated in anthropometric or metabolic indicators. As a result, it was found that there was a weight loss of 2 to 5 kg per year (↓5.2 %), fat-free mass was measured, which in three months was reduced by 2.7 % and, in some cases, improvements were reported in insulin levels (↑9. 1 %), glucosa (↓1.4 %), increased HDL cholesterol (↑7 %) and decreased triglycerides (↓13 %), as well as a 3.4 mmHg decrease in systolic pressure.
